Nolan Cash was born in Kingsland, Arkansas, on October 8, 1939, seven years after his cousin, Johnny. The bi-racial product of a rape by a black man of a 16-year-old Christian girl in America's conservative Bible Belt, he experienced extreme prejudice growing up during the racially divided '50s. His opportunity for country music stardom beckoned when he witnessed an event that inspired him to write the song that would change his life - the church massacre at Bowling Green. What happened next might have come straight from the pages of a Hollywood political thriller. Nolan was charged with treason and hidden in the prison system with a new identity, his secret about that event in Bowling Green buried with him. Only the 50-year disclosure on official secrets - CIA documents recently released - enabled the facts to finally emerge. Here, then, is the story of Nolan Cash, collateral damage in America's struggle to move away from racist division. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Andrew Brel. Bowling for the Mob is the story of a man considered by many to be the greatest bowler that ever lived, yet his life became a struggle to conquer his inner demons. By age 12, Bob Purzycki was one of the best bowlers in the country. He was set to compete at the World's Fair in 1964 in Queens. Two days before, a neighborhood kid hit Bob in the face with a mallet and crushed the side of his head causing permanent loss of vision in his left eye. Despite everyone telling him to give up, Bob trained to bowl with one eye. By his 18th birthday, his game had improved to a 220 average - a score that was unheard of in 1970. He joined the Professional Bowlers Association at 19 and won Bowler of the Year in 1973 and 1974. Then Bob got involved with the underworld as the mob began making bets on his tournaments, which started a downhill spiral. After getting involved with the mafia, a viscous battle with drug abuse and doing jail time, he redeemed himself and went on to play in the Super Bowl High Roller in Vegas. He won the grand prize beating the best bowlers in the world and became champion at 47. An amazing story of one man's mistakes and accomplishments, Purzycki says it best "I was either going to kill somebody, kill myself or end up in an insane asylum." 1. Language: English. After hitting rock bottom through addiction, bowling legend Bob Perry learned that religion is for people who don't want to go to hell. Spirituality is for people who have already been there. Perry tells his heart-wrenching, inspiring story of bowling for the mob and drug and alcohol addiction in his new book, Redemption Alley. Perry, considered by many to be one of the most naturally-talented bowlers in the history of the sport, had potential to become one of the best even at the young age of 12. Unfortunately, he grew up in 1970s Paterson, New Jersey, where everyone knew someone who was "connected" - with the mob, that is. Instead of training for championships, Perry began doing odd jobs for wiseguys and hustling hundreds of thousands of dollars in after-house "action bowling" for John Gotti, who later became the boss of the Gambino crime family. Perry's connections with organized crime eventually landed him in federal prison, but not before he became addicted to crack cocaine, alcohol, and painkillers and was homeless on the streets of New York. Ultimately, Perry washed up on the shores of St. Christopher's Inn, a shelter run by Franciscan monks. It was there that he had six fateful encounters with an angelic messenger who no one else could see - a monk whose message was so powerful that Bob Perry has now been sober for 22 years. In Redemption Alley, Perry not only shares his remarkable story of bowling success, his dangerous association with hoodlums and gangsters, and his recovery from addiction, but also his inspiring, decades-long spiritual quest, and his sober journey back into the bowling world. 1. Cage the Elephant has toured the globe, sold hundreds of thousands of albums, and become, in Rolling Stone’s words, “one of rock’s best young bands.” Before any of that, though, Cage was just five guys from Bowling Green, a small town in southern Kentucky. In Home Grown, Craig Fehrman secured Almost Famous-levels of access to tell the story of Cage’s rise. But along the way he discovered an even bigger story - how a tiny, overlooked place like Bowling Green had itself become one of the most vibrant music scenes in the country. Through vivid storytelling and exclusive details, Home Grown traces the history of Cage, from the band forming in high school to hanging with the Foo Fighters. But the Single also explores how and why Cage keeps coming home. You’ll meet the characters and locations that make up Bowling Green’s scene: the music-first dive bar where Cage got its start; the creaky, Pirate-themed house where artists gather to jam; the radio DJ who sacrificed everything to play local music - plus a slew of exciting young bands, all in different stages of their careers. How does a music scene work, especially in a place most people assume doesn’t even have a music scene? Home Grown has the answers, and it makes a great read for music fans - or for anyone who grew up in a place like Bowling Green. Craig Fehrman is a writer who lives in Indiana. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The New Republic, and Slate, among others. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Rex Anderson. In Raymond Chandler's favourite novel, Mr Bowling buys the newspapers only to find out what the latest is on the murders he's just committed.... Mr Bowling is getting away with murder. On each occasion he buys a newspaper to see whether anyone suspects him. But there is a war on, and the clues he leaves are going unnoticed. Which is a shame, because Mr Bowling is not a conventional serial killer: he wants to get caught so that his torment can end. How many more newspapers must he buy before the police finally catch up with him? Donald Henderson was an actor and playwright who had also written novels as D. H. Landels, but with little success. While working for the BBC in London during the Second World War, his fortunes finally changed with Mr Bowling Buys a Newspaper, a darkly satirical portrayal of a murderer that was to be promoted enthusiastically by Raymond Chandler as his favourite detective novel. But even the author of The Big Sleep could not save it from oblivion: it has remained out of print for more than 60 years. This Detective Club classic is introduced by award-winning novelist Martin Edwards, author of The Story of Classic Crime in 100 Books, who reveals new information about Henderson's often troubled life and writing career. 1.
